Wind Monitoring for Wind Turbines

The energy output of wind turbines is directly related to the alignment of the turbine with the wind direction and operation within a defined range of wind speeds. Outside the economic threshold and above safety limits, wind turbines are turned out of the wind and shut down.

Product Description

The INT10 (right) is a cup anemometer for measuring wind speed, while the INT30 (left) is a wind direction sensor. Wind measurement is achieved through non-contact conversion into a linear output signal. In addition to their storm- and weather-resistant design, the sensors feature a 2-wire signal output. Due to their all-metal construction, they are UV- and corrosion-resistant. These wind sensors are UL/CSA certified.

Functionality of KRIWAN Windsensors

The wind speed drives a cup anemometer. The resulting rotational movement is converted into an electrical signal in the maintenance-free sensor, without contact and thus wear-free. This signal is processed in a microprocessor and output as a standardized signal analogous to the wind speed. Similarly, the wind direction sensor deflects its wind vane in the direction of the flow, and the conversion and output of the electrical signal occur in analogy to the cup anemometer.

How are the data from the wind sensors used to control the alignment?

Maintaining operational parameters within the economic and safe range is a primary goal of wind turbine operators.

The data collected by these sensors are used to control the alignment of the wind turbine towards the optimal wind direction. Through continuous monitoring and adjustment of the alignment, the turbine can achieve maximum energy yield. Additionally, the wind sensors help maintain operational parameters within the economic and safe range. This means operating the turbine to utilize optimal wind conditions for efficient energy generation while ensuring protection against extreme wind conditions that could jeopardize its integrity.
