The new EN60335 standard series became effective in July 2007. It governs the safety of electrical appliances. Section 2-34 in particular deals with "requirements for motor compressors". The purpose of these standards is to minimise hazards to the environment and to human health resulting from the use of "household or similar appliances". Appliances covered by this standard are, for example (note 101, EN60335-2-34:2002): Heat pumps, icemakers, air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezer units.
However, the standard also covers any "appliances not normally intended for household use, but which still might pose a hazard to the public, such as appliances operated by employees in stores or commercial enterprises" - in supermarkets, for instance.
A certification according to the American UL standard of the same name has also been acquired, allowing the compressor protection units to be used worldwide.
More safety, reduced costs
Using the patented KRIWAN compressor protection unit compliant with 60335 + 60730 not only fulfils strict safety requirements. It also allows to dispense with the overcurrent trips that have been used until today.
In addition to the compressor protection unit, the monitoring system also includes the winding temperature sensor (PTC). A comprehensive quality assurance in design and material selection enables KRIWAN to guarantee the required reliability for this component and offer the KRIWAN safety sensor. A secondary, redundant sensor is not required for temperature measurement any more.
The 60335 + 60730 compliant sensors and compressor protection units are available on request.
Compliance with highest quality requirements guaranteed
A key requirement of the standard is the so-called "dual fault simulation". It means that even if two faults occur in the system at the same time, it must be guaranteed that the system is transferred to a safe state in a controlled manner without posing a hazard to human health or the environment. In cooperation with leading compressor manufacturers and the VDE, KRIWAN has developed a solution that integrates fundamental safety requirements into the familiar INT69 motor protection devices.
In addition to comprehensive basic research, the development process also included the selection of suitable materials and components. Both the design and the manufacture of the devices fulfil extremely high quality requirements. A wide variety of possible malfunctions have been considered theoretically and then generated in the actual device, followed by an evaluation of their effects in cooperation with the approval authority. In addition to the existing ISO9001 certification and UL monitoring, a special VDE production monitoring process has been implemented in the KRIWAN manufacture. The manufacturing process is now audited annually by the VDE.
Externally appearance, the only difference between the new and previous compressor protection units is their name (e.g., previous: INT69, 60335 + 60730 compliant: INT69-2). This allows them to be exchanged without further work being required.
